For any person who is living in our society, the debate about our country’s health care has become a daily, if not hourly, topic of discussion. It has become center stage on television and radio, and in all types of print media. It has even taken over many of the pulpits in our country as Christ has been set aside for political dialogue.
As I was contemplating the debate the other day, I was struck with a wonderfully sobering thought. Regardless of how the vote turns out on this issue, God will not have changed one iota. My salvation will be as secure tomorrow as it is today. What have I to worry about? Nothing.
It wasn’t too many years ago that there was no insurance of any type and believers were quite content. We had, and still have, something far better than insurance. We have “assurance.” I John 5:11-13 assures us of our salvation and Matthew 28:20 assures us of Christ’s continual presence with us. Isn’t that enough?
The recent political events have just gone to prove one more time how man’s schemes only manifest his sinfulness. Even in trying to do something good, our politicians choose evil means. As believers, the ends can never justify the means. For us, the means must be consistent with the ends. We are to do all things to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). We need to be careful not to get caught up in this debate to the extent that we forget who is our refuge and our supply. It is not the government NOR is it capitalism and free enterprise.
We are reminded that people down through recorded history have faced formidable foes and horrendous situations. Yet, when the period of time had passed, God was still God. When the Assyrians and many other enemies of Israel devastated the country and killed countless Israelites, God was still God. When Rome leveled Jerusalem, God was still God. When Nero persecuted the Christians, God was still God. When Chairman Mao tortured and murdered millions of believers in China, God was still God. The point is that we must not allow any event take our eyes off of our true Redeemer. No matter what your feelings are about the health care bill or even the process, God has not lost control.
One of the President’s staff recently said, “We must not let a crisis go to waste.” You or I may think of the recent events as a “crisis,” but we must also see it as an opportunity. It is an opportunity to honor God with our attitudes and an opportunity to minister to others. We have no idea what will result from political action, but the gospel remains unchanged and the spiritual needs of men and women remain unchanged. God will provide opportunities to His people in the days ahead to proclaim Him. Let us be alert to and ready. Let us focus on being obedient to the Lord and to trust Him with the future. He has provided for our spiritual health care at the cross. He can probably provide for our physical care, too. God bless you.
